New vs Used vs Refurbished Power 9
How to think about new-old-stock, used, and refurbished Power 9 systems when the platform is mature but still widely deployed.
Power 9 buying is no longer a single channel decision. Some buyers need a tested replacement drawer or capacity upgrade. Others need a short-term bridge before Power 11. The right answer depends on IBM i release plans, parts risk, and how long the system must stay in production.
Used
Best when the price is low, the workload is noncritical, or the machine is a temporary bridge. Verify serial, firmware, memory, storage, and license position.
Refurbished
Best when you need testing, warranty, and a cleaner service path without paying for a current-generation replacement immediately.
New-old-stock
Useful only when a reseller can prove availability, support terms, and configuration fit. Do not assume IBM standard support remains equal across all models.
Replacement
Best when IBM i 7.6, long runway, stronger availability, or Power 11 architecture are part of the business case.
