IBM Power 9 Machine Types
The machine type on your label decides your IBM support date, your parts, and your resale value. Here is every Power 9 number and what it means for your next move.
Two servers can both be called an S914 and still have different IBM support dates.
The machine type on the front label tells you which one you have. That number decides your support date, which parts fit, and what the server is worth if you sell it.

Support dates come from IBM's product lifecycle pages, checked September 27, 2026. "No end date posted" means IBM has stopped selling the server but has not announced when standard support ends.
A models and G models look the same
IBM refreshed the S914, S922, and S924 in 2020. The new versions kept the same names. Only the last letter of the machine type changed, from A to G.
A models lost IBM support
IBM ended standard support for the 9009-41A, 9009-22A, and 9009-42A on January 31, 2026. They still run fine. Repairs now come from third-party maintenance or IBM's paid service extension.
G models still have IBM support
IBM has not posted an end date for the 9009-41G, 9009-22G, or 9009-42G. If you are buying a used Power 9 as a spare or a bridge, a G model gives you more runway.
You cannot tell them apart by looking
Check the label on the front, the QMODEL system value in IBM i, or the managed system properties on the HMC. Never accept "an S924" as the whole description when you buy or sell.
Parts mostly carry over
Many memory, disk, and adapter feature codes work in both A and G models, but not all. Match the feature code to your exact machine type before you order.
What to do once you know your machine type
Look up your server in the Power 9 model directory for specs and the newer system that replaces it. Check the full Power 9 support dates by model.
